Restoration Services

Restoration of family Bibles, antiquarian books, and other volumes require a variety of hand bookbinding techniques to repair damaged leaves, re-sew loose pages, and conserve deteriorated bindings. Bayou Bindery uses only acid-free materials and practices only reversible techniques.

In re-backing, new cloth or leather is placed under the original materials while saving much of the original binding. The new work blends with the remaining original materials.

For re-sewing, only linen thread is used for strength and durability.

Through paper repair, worn pages are repaired using a variety of oriental tissues with wheat starch paste. This technique allows the repair to be easily reversed if needed, yet is remarkably strong due to the very long fibers of the oriental tissues.
